Quiet Oasis Ready Off Bench, Wins Wilshire At 15-1

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 29, 2012)—Making her first start in more than five months, Quiet Oasis upset seven rivals and won the $100,000 Wilshire Handicap Sunday at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Owner J. Paul Reddam and jockey Mario Gutierrez, who collected his first local stakes win, hope the result was a positive omen for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.

Gutierrez will ride the Reddam-owned I’ll Have Another May 5 as the 3-year-old son of Flower Alley tries to repeat his success in the Santa Anita Derby.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 28, 2012)— Unusual Heatwave, a half-brother to 2010 winner Alphie’s Bet, collared favored Stoney Fleece in the closing yards to take the $300,000 Snow Chief,(video) capping another memorable California Gold Rush Day for jockey Rafael Bejarano at Betfair Hollywood Park.

About 24 hours after he had been sworn in as a United States citizen, Bejarano, 29, won four other races Saturday – three of them stakes – and this was the second time he’s had five wins on a Gold Rush card. The Peruvian-born rider also accomplished the feat in 2009.

Through the first three days of the Spring/Summer meet, Bejarano has five stakes wins. The record for a Spring/Summer season is 18, set by Bill Shoemaker during a 77-day meet in 1971.

Streakin’ Mohican Sets Turf Course Record

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 28, 2012)—Making his first start for new connections after being claimed Feb. 25, Streakin’ Mohican established a course record for six furlongs on turf Saturday at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Quickly establishing command under jockey Rafael Bejarano, the 5-year-old gelded son of Songandaprayer was never menaced and won by 5 ¼ lengths.

Despite being taken in hand well before the finish, Streakin’ Mohican, who was taken for $32,000 by a partnership that includes trainer Bill Spawr, stopped the clock in 1:07.24. This bettered the previous record of 1.07.54 set by Scottsbluff in the Robert K. Kerlan Memorial Handicap July 15, 2007.

Lone Friday Afternoon Program Of Meet May 4; Early Post Time (11 A.M.) Kentucky Derby Day

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 28, 2012) — Betfair Hollywood Park will offer afternoon racing Friday, May 4 and post time will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5 for the simulcast of the 138th Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs.

This is the lone Friday program of the Spring/Summer meet that will be held during the day. Post time is 1 p.m.

Gates will open at 7 a.m. both May 4 and May 5. Betfair Hollywood Park will import all of the Kentucky Oaks program Friday and the complete Derby Day card Saturday. The first import from Churchill Downs is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. both days.

Utopian Earns First Stakes Win In Inglewood; Pick Six Carryover ($65,323) For Saturday

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 27, 2012)—After tracking a slow pace throughout, Utopian edged Smug in the final strides to win the $98,000 Inglewood Handicap (video) Friday at Betfair Hollywood Park.

The first night program of the Spring/Summer meet also produced the season’s initial Pick Six carryover. The carryover for Saturday, which features the 13th California Gold Rush, is $65,323.

Post time is 1 p.m. The Pick Six will begin in the fifth race, which is the $70,000 Grey Memo Stakes. Scheduled post time is 3:06 p.m.

Bejarano Sworn In As U.S. Citizen Friday

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 27, 2012)—Some two months after passing his test, jockey Rafael Bejarano was sworn in as a United States citizen Friday.

A 15-time riding titlist in Southern California, Bejarano, 29, was inducted in a ceremony Friday in Louisville, Ky. before flying back to California so he could honor his mounts in the evening at Betfair Hollywood Park.

A winner of more than 2,700 races and over $123 million in purses, Bejarano was extremely proud of his status.

Acclamation Scratched From Inglewood Handicap

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 27, 2012)—Acclamation, the champion older male of 2011, has had his comeback put on hold.

The two-time winner of both the Jim Murray and Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicaps was scratched from Friday night’s $100,000 Inglewood Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Don Warren, who trains the 6-year-old California bred for owner-breeders Bud and Judy Johnston and Peter and Mary Hilvers, said the decision was made after the son of Unusual Heat galloped Thursday morning.

The winner-take-all prize is $3,000 plus a two-night VIP stay at the Golden Nugget Las Vegas.
