INGLEWOOD, Calif. (July 5, 2012)—Making her first start since April 22, Lilly’s Perfect rallied inside Belle Gallantey in the final sixteenth to win the $38,350 feature Thursday at Betfair Hollywood Park.

The half-length win was the fourth in 21 starts for the 5-year-old daughter of Pleasantly Perfect and the Marquetry mare Lilly Bean. Owned by Calabria Stables, Lynn Chang and Jim Volk and trained by Dean Greenman, the 8-5 second choice increased her earnings to $120,980.

Forced to steady off heels under jockey Garrett Gomez down the backstretch while 7-5 favorite Really Elegant set the pace, Lilly’s Perfect settled into a tracking position approaching the stretch, was able to find room in the stretch while angling inside the eventual runner-up and prevailed by a half-length.

Jockey Quotes

JOE TALAMO, BLUESKIESNRAINBOWS, Winner: “(Baffert) told me to sit still until he switches leads and to save as much horse as you can until the last part. That’s pretty much what we did. We went so easy the first part so we had a lot of horse left when those two horses came at him. He fought really hard, just like he did in the Santa Anita Derby. I appreciate the opportunity they gave me with him.”

MARTIN PEDROZA, NONIOS, Second: “Maybe I should have put him right up with the winner. The track has been playing slow lately and it’s been messing with people’s minds. That’s why I rode him like I did. In retrospect, if I had been right behind him, maybe I could have beaten him. Who knows?”

Mike Puype has been around long enough to understand the business side of horse racing.

That knowledge, however, doesn’t take away the sting from the departure of Turbulent Descent, who was sold for an undisclosed sum last Saturday. The trainer took time Tuesday to reflect on her career and how her absence will affect him.

“It’s a hard thing to have happen,” said Puype. “She’s been nothing but good for everyone involved with her from the moment she first came to my barn.”
