Desormais, Cozzetti Join CashCall Futurity Chase

Two-year-olds were coming from everywhere for the $750,000 CashCall Futurity December 17 at Hollywood Park.

Desormais was flown to California from Europe Wednesday, one day after Cozzetti arrived from Kentucky, to swell the probable lineup to 13 in the Grade I test at 1 1/16 miles on Cushion Track.

“Desormais is en route from Amsterdam as we speak,” said Aron Wellman, head of the Eclipse Thoroughbred partnership that owns the colt, Wednesday morning of a scheduled noon landing. He is scheduled to join the Paddy Gallagher stable after clearing quarantine.

Weemissfrankie Seeks To Join Elite Starlet Company

Trainer Peter Eurton stood outside the stall of Weemissfrankie in Barn 52 North at Hollywood Park Sunday morning and pronounced the 2-year-old filly ready for the $250,000-guaranteed Hollywood Starlet Saturday. The Grade I will be run at 1 1/16 miles on Cushion Track.

The chestnut filly stood quietly as acupuncturist Bob Banever treated her back while veteran assistant and groom Lupe Perez held her. A goat named Pickles, her traveling companion, stood outside.

Weemissfrankie, winner of the Grade I Del Mar Debutante and Oak Leaf Stakes at Santa Anita, seeks to become only the second filly to sweep the “triple crown” of 2-year-old filly stakes in Southern California. Excellent Meeting is the only horse to have accomplished that feat (1998).

Reddam Seeks CashCall Futurity Gold

Owner J. Paul Reddam, whose consumer loans company sponsors the $750,000-guaranteed CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park December 17, would like to keep the winner’s share in his own pocket.

Reddam plans to start both Handsome Mike, purchased privately after a second-place finish in the Generous Stakes Sunday, and Basmati, runner-up in the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes in Louisiana November 19 for his wife Zillah, in the Grade I test at 1 1/16 miles on Cushion Track.

Doug O’Neill trains both colts for Reddam and said that Corey Nakatani, who won the race last year on Comma to the Top, would probably return on Basmati.

Lucky Chappy To Ship For CashCall Futurity

Four turf stars trained by H. Graham Motion were flown back from California to his training center in Maryland Sunday morning but Motion plans to send another before the Hollywood Park meet ends next month.

Motion indicated that he would ship Lucky Chappy west for the $750,000 CashCall Futurity, a Grade I test for 2-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles on Cushion Track, on December 17.

Lucky Chappy, an Irish-bred colt owned by Team Valor International, finished a closing fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf under Joel Rosario in his last start November 5 at Churchill Downs.

McGaughey Imagining Hollywood Derby Upset

Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey, who shipped Good Reward west for a 16-to-1 upset victory in the 2004 Hollywood Derby, hopes to spring another surprise with Imagining in the $250,000 Grade I test for 3-year-olds at 1 ¼ miles on grass at Hollywood Park Sunday.

The Derby climaxes the Turf Festival, five grass stakes for a total of $950,000 in purses to be run here Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Hollywood Park stable area took on the look of a mini-Breeders’ Cup Wednesday with the arrival of horses from England, Ireland, New York, Kentucky, Maryland and Florida for the rich races.

Imagining, a chestnut homebred owned by Phipps Stable, arrived here Monday on a Tex Sutton flight that originated in New York with stablemate Rescue Squad—ticketed for the $100,000 Native Diver Handicap here December 3—and was stabled with Jerry Hollendorfer in Barn 70 South.

Eastern Shippers Arrive Monday For Turf Festival

A Tex Sutton flight is scheduled to deliver several Eastern horses Monday for Turf Festival races at Hollywood Park Friday through Sunday.

The flight will pick up horses in New York and Kentucky, including multiple stakes winner Never Retreat for the $250,000 Matriarch Friday and highly regarded Willcox Inn for the $250,000 Hollywood Derby Sunday. Both are Grade I.

Also scheduled on the flight are Imagining and Casino Host for the Hollywood Derby and More Than Love for the $100,000 Miesque Stakes for 2-year-old fillies Friday.

Motion Ships Sanagas For Turf Cup, Trio For Matriarch

Trainer H. Graham Motion vanned Sanagas from his Fair Hill, Md., training base Thursday to Newark to be flown to California for the $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup at Hollywood Park Saturday.

Sanagas, a 5-year-old German-bred gelding, will be accompanied by assistant Alice Clapham and stabled in Barn 53 North with trainer Gary Mandella.

Sanagas will be accompanied on the flight by Gypsy’s Warning, defending champion in the $250,000 Matriarch Stakes here November 25. Motion said he will fly out two other stakes-winning females, Summer Soiree and Unbridled Humor, Tuesday to join Gypsy’s Warning in the Matriarch.

Drysdale Duo, Ashtar Work For Hollywood Turf Cup

Multiple stakes winner Bourbon Bay and Miss Match, a Grade I stakes-winning mare, worked seven furlongs on the Hollywood Park turf course Sunday morning for the $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup Saturday.

Bourbon Bay was clocked in 1:29 under exercise rider Debra Biggs while Miss Match was timed in 1:29.40 with jockey Mike Smith to the satisfaction of trainer Neil Drysdale for the Grade I test at 1 ½ miles on turf.

Bourbon Bay, 5-year-old gelding who has won five graded stakes, seeks to rebound from an eighth-place finish in the Grade I Northern Dancer Stakes at Woodbine September 18 in quest of his first Grade I score.
“He didn’t care for the course,” said Drysdale of the disappointing effort in Canada.
