INGLEWOOD, Calif. (September 5, 2010)—J P’s Gusto, who won both the Willard Proctor Memorial and the Hollywood Juvenile Championship during the spring-summer meet at Hollywood Park, will try to join an exclusive list on Wednesday.

If the 2-year-old son of Successful Appeal wins the $250,000 Del Mar Futurity, the main event on closing day, he will become only the sixth horse to win both the Hollywood Juvenile Championship and the Futurity.

The last youngster to accomplish the feat was Saratoga Six, who won both races in 1984. This came one year after the filly Althea, who, like Saratoga Six, was trained by Wayne Lukas, completed the Juvenile-Futurity parlay.

The other four who have both races are Tomy Lee (1958), Old Pueblo (1957), Blue Ruler (1954) and Star Fiddle (1948).

Owned by Gem, Inc. and trained by David Hofmans, J P’s Gusto has won three of four starts and earned $187,360. After his two Hollywood Park victories, the $52,000 yearling purchase won the Best Pal, a Grade II, on Aug. 8 at Del Mar. He led throughout while winning by a half-length.

Patrick Valenzuela, who gained the mount on J P’s Gusto in the Best Pal after Joe Talamo was injured, has the mount Wednesday. Valenzuela is seeking his second Futurity win, having won aboard Best Pal, who was inducuted into racing’s Hall of Fame last month, in 1990.

Ten others are scheduled to start in the Grade 1 at seven furlongs, including Western Mood, the runner-up in the Hollywood Juvenile.

From the inside out, the complete cast for the 63rd Del Mar Futurity: Jaycito, Martin Garcia rides, 116 pounds; Riveting Reason, Alex Solis, 116; McKenzies Way, David Flores, 118; J P’s Gusto, Patrick Valenzuela, 122; Just Imagine, Martin Pedroza, 116; Major Art, Mike Smith, 120; Western Mood, Joel Rosario, 118; Indian Winter, Rafael Bejarano, 116; Comma to the Top, Corey Nakatani, 116; Road Ready, Victor Espinoza, 120 and Gahnzo Bob, Alonso Quinonez, 116.
