INGLEWOOD, Calif. (September 8, 2010)—Jockey Martin Pedroza and trainer Bob Baffert, who combined for a milestone victory at Hollywood Park when E Z’s Gentleman won the Triple Bend Handicap on July 10, will team again today on opening day at Fairplex Park.

Pedroza, who earned the 1,000th victory of his career at Hollywood Park in the Triple Bend, will ride Subsidized for Baffert in the $50,000 Beverly J. Lewis Stakes. An ungraded race at 6 ½ furlongs, the Lewis drew eight other 3-year-old fillies.

Owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, the same partnership that campaigns multiple stakes winner Lookin At Lucky, Subsidized has won two of three and earned $62,600.

A daughter of Ghostzapper, Subsidized finished second in her Santa Anita debut in April, then won against maidens on May 12 at Hollywood Park. In her most recent outing, the $185,000 yearling purchase won an allowance race by a neck at Del Mar, defeating Saint Isabelle, who returned to win her next race.

Baffert will also send out Seriously, a Gulch filly whose scored her only win against maidens last Sept. 26 at Fairplex. Owned by Thoroughbred Legends Racing Stable LLC, Seriously will be ridden by Martin Garcia.

Earlier in the day, Pedroza, Fairplex Park’s all-time leading rider, will square off in a match race – at 1 1/16 miles – against David Flores, who is second in victories at the Pomona track. Flores will ride Cat Brando and Pedroza has the call on Dave’s Ruler. If either of the two maidens scratch, Derrick Do will step in as the replacement.

The field, from inside out, for the Beverly J. Lewis: Got an Itch, Alonso Quinonez rides, 123 pounds; True Religion, Corey Nakatani, 118; Candy’s Pleasure, Jose Verenzuela, 118; Folk Dancer, Paul Atkinson, 118; Come Home Lady, David Flores, 118; Feeling Fancy, Christian Santiago Reyes, 123; Subsidized, Martin Pedroza, 123; Fairway Road, Omar Berrio, 118 and Seriously, Martin Garcia, 123.
